Letters To A Young Catholic: The Art of Mentoring

By: George Weigel

Wow! Few books are as inspiring and loaded with great content as this book is from Weigel. Here he pens 14 letters to “young Catholics” – which is not meant to be young in age, but ‘young’ in their depth of understanding of the whole richness and global connectedness that comes with the Catholic Church. If you have attended a few parishes in your lifetime, and mostly just gone to church on Sundays, then this book is for you, and will open your eyes to so much more.

Each letter takes us to different places in the world, and weaves together a description of a different element of the faith at the same time, making each letter/chapter a real joy to read and experience. Weigel is gifted at writing like few authors are. You’ll quickly become immersed in the depth of reflection and powerful imagery that he employs in this book.

I read this book with a friend of mine over a 14-week period. Each week we would read one of Weigel’s letters, and then get together to talk about it over coffee. We were both ‘young’ at heart, and hungry to learn more about the faith, meanwhile passionate about traveling and seeing the world. Reading through Weigel’s book, we journeyed from England to Poland, from Jerusalem to Rome, from Cathedrals to Monasteries and pubs.

If you’re looking for a way to “get away” this summer while at the same time doing so on a friendly budget, then I strongly recommend that you pick up this book of letters by Weigel, and buckle up for a real adventure of faith and fun. If you know someone who may benefit from this journey of discovery and personal growth, why not read this book with a friend like I did. You may be surprised at how much you enjoy talking with each other regularly about each chapter, while growing in your faith together.

Bon voyage!
