About the Catholic Women's League of Canada

The Catholic Women's League of Canada (CWL) is the largest national organization of Catholic women in Canada. The League is a powerful vehicle representing close to 100,000 Catholic women, expressing their concerns and acting on current issues.

Members of the national executive meet annually with federal ministers on issues raised by our resolutions which, in recent years have included child pornography, land mines, clean water, genetic engineering of food, bioethics and reproductive technology. In addition to supporting all life issues, the CWL also supports women's programs in developing countries through Mater Care International, Coady International Institute and Development and Peace.

At the Parish level, the CWL is involved in many aspects of Parish Life including fund raising, social events and spiritual activities.

The Catholic Women's League is the united voice of Catholic women across the country.

History of the CWL: The Catholic Women's League of Canada was organized nationally on June 17, 1920 and granted federal incorporation on December 12, 1923. The League is officially recognized by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) as a lay association of women and is affiliated with the World Union of Catholic Women's Organizations (WUCWO), a world-wide federation holding membership in the conference of International Catholic Organizations (ICO) and having consultative status with agencies of the United Nations.

History of St. Isidore CWL: The CWL is part of a long tradition of service at St. Isidore. Our first CWL charter was dated Oct. 5, 1924 and the first President was Margaret Carroll. The original charter was closed and reopened twice, the most recent being in 2002. In total, the CWL has been active for about 60 years at St. Isidore. At the right front of the Church, there is a beautiful stained glass window that is dedicated to the CWL.
